Spring 1883, Establishment Hotel Sydney, 9-12 September 2015

This series of small paintings were presented in the Establishment Hotel as part of Spring 1883, a hotel art fair alongside the Sydney Contemporary art fair.
These small paintings are seemingly related to vintage vernacular portrait photographs presenting a collision and fusion of painterly and photographic imagery. Alternating between realism and painterly abstraction, these works question our faith in the veracity of both portraiture and photography. Faces are reconfigured, recomposed and recoloured. The painter seeks to use a flexible, shifting painting process in conjunction with imagination and visual memory to engender alternate realities as the images are being painted.
