Fictions 2016

“Fictions 2016” presents a series of paintings whose imagery has been primarily sourced from the mainly anonymous, vintage, vernacular portrait photographs found in antique stores, flea markets and on the internet.
The original images are gradually recomposed, reconfigured and in conjunction with imagination and visual memory are replaced through the shifting process of painting. Colours shift and fade, faces and backgrounds dissolve into and out of each other and new characters re-emerge as “fictive” portraits. Each portrait is unnamed yet each is titled with a particular place and year equally as “real” and as fugitive as the paintings themselves.
