2020
The paintings made during 2019/20 focussed primarily on local sites and landscapes familiar to me through my daily walks. These sites, initially located within an inner city, urban landscape moved thematically from the explicitly urban experience towards a much more liminal depiction of urban encroachment within landscape. The thematic title “disruptions” refers to the fugitive nature of the urban environment, constantly torn down and rebuilt, where many layers may exist in the same space. This is reflected in the painted imagery where the painted surface reflects and shifts with deletions, constructions and visual overlays. This became more explicit in the later landscapes where the urban constructions, the seemingly random landscape and the painted surface attempt to create painterly, unified hybrid forms.
